Acute Elevators were appointed to assess the feasibility and scope of a full modernisation of the existing triplex lift group. The lifts form the primary vertical transportation system within the building, supporting continuous movement across all ten floors and playing a critical role in the daily operation of the site. The client required a solution that would not only replace outdated equipment but also deliver a measurable uplift in performance, reliability, and energy efficiency. A detailed survey of the motor room, shaft configuration, and electrical distribution confirmed that the existing arrangement could accommodate modern equipment without structural alteration. This allowed the project to focus on integrating new high‑performance components within the existing footprint, ensuring minimal disruption to building users while delivering a substantial improvement in system capability.

The modernisation presented several technical challenges. The existing lift group was operating on ageing motors and outdated control technology that no longer met the demands of a high‑traffic office environment. The electrical supply was not designed to support modern variable‑frequency drive systems, and the client required the works to be completed with minimal disruption to a fully occupied building. Integrating new motors, controllers, ropes, and door operators within the constraints of the existing shaft and motor room required careful engineering. The equipment needed to be capable of sustained peak‑time usage, deliver smoother and more efficient operation, and comply with current safety and performance standards. No single off‑the‑shelf package could meet all these requirements, so a tailored combination of components was selected to ensure compatibility, resilience, and long‑term serviceability. Upgrading the electrical supply added further complexity, requiring close coordination between engineering, electrical, and operational teams to ensure the new systems could be installed, tested, and commissioned safely while maintaining access for building users.

The Bracknell modernisation presented a series of technical and operational challenges that required a carefully engineered solution. The existing triplex lift group was operating on ageing motors, outdated control technology, and an electrical supply that was not designed to support modern drive systems. The client needed a solution that would significantly improve reliability and performance without causing prolonged disruption to a fully occupied ten‑storey office environment. The primary challenge was to integrate new lift motors and advanced control panels within the constraints of the existing shaft, motor room layout, and electrical infrastructure. The equipment had to be selected and configured to handle sustained peak‑time traffic, deliver smoother and more efficient operation, and comply with current safety and performance standards. Achieving this required a bespoke engineering approach, as no off‑the‑shelf package could meet the combined requirements for compatibility, resilience, and long‑term serviceability. To support the new technology, the building’s electrical supply to the lift group required upgrading and reconfiguration. This had to be completed while maintaining safe access and minimising downtime for building users. The project demanded close coordination between engineering, electrical, and operational teams to ensure that all new components could be installed, tested, and commissioned within the existing structural and service constraints.

A comprehensive modernisation solution was developed, centred on the installation of Ziehl‑Abegg high‑efficiency traction motors, chosen for their robust duty capability and smooth, energy‑efficient performance. These were paired with Kollmorgen MPK4 controllers, providing advanced control logic, improved ride quality, and enhanced diagnostic capability to support proactive maintenance and reduce downtime. Drako ropes were installed to ensure optimal traction and long‑term reliability, complementing the new motor and controller arrangement. To improve door performance—a key factor in lift reliability—new Langer & Laumann door operators were fitted, offering faster opening and closing speeds, quieter operation, and improved resistance to wear. The building’s electrical infrastructure was upgraded to support the new drive systems, ensuring sufficient capacity and improved stability. All new components were engineered to fit within the existing motor room and shaft footprint, avoiding the need for structural modifications and ensuring a seamless integration with the building’s existing layout. The combined solution delivered a future‑proofed lift group capable of meeting contemporary performance expectations, reducing energy consumption, and providing a significantly improved user experience. Result Following a series of coordination meetings with the client, the final specification was agreed and a clear programme established. All new motors, controllers, ropes, door operators, and electrical components were designed, verified, and manufactured within a 16‑week production window, ensuring the project remained on schedule. Installation works were completed over an 8‑week period. Throughout this time, Acute Elevators maintained a strong on‑site presence, conducting regular inspections and issuing structured progress reports to provide full transparency and reassurance. These updates ensured the client had continuous visibility of programme adherence, technical milestones, and any operational considerations affecting the building. Once installation was complete, a full programme of testing, commissioning, and verification was carried out, with all tests witnessed by the client. The modernised lift group met all compliance requirements, delivered the expected performance improvements, and aligned fully with Acute Elevators’ quality standards. The project was delivered within the original programme, and the dedication and professionalism of the Acute Elevators team were recognised and appreciated by the client.
