Comprehensive Passenger and Goods Lift Modernisation as Part of a Major Office Refurbishment Programme
KPMG's Watford office under went a significant refurbishment programme as part of a wider building redevelopment managed by FI Management as the principal contractor. As part of the overall upgrade strategy, Acute Elevators were appointed to modernise the building's triplex passenger lift group together with a separate goods lift, delivering substantial improvements in reliability, performance, aesthetics, and long-term maintainability.
The project formed an important part of the wider office refurbishment, with the objective of providing modern, reliable lift systems that complemented the upgraded workplace environment whilst extending the operational life of the existing installations.

PROJECT SUMMARY
The project involved the complete modernisation of three passenger lifts operating as a triplex group, together with a separate goods lift serving the building.
Passenger Lift Modernisation Works
- Replacement of all passenger lift controllers with new Kollmorgen MPK4 microprocessor-based control systems.
- Comprehensive electrical upgrades throughout all passenger lift installations.
- Installation of bespoke lift car interiors designed to complement the refurbished office environment.
- Replacement of car door operators.
- Installation of new Meiller 2-hour fire-rated car and landing door systems.
- Supply and installation of black stainless-steel door finishes throughout the passenger lift group.
- Upgrading associated wiring, safety circuits, and control equipment.

Goods Lift Modernisation Works

PROJECT Introduction
The existing lift installations had reached astage where ageing control systems, electrical equipment, and door components were becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. Reliability concerns, obsolete equipment, and the availability of replacement parts were creating ongoing challenges for the client.
In addition, the appearance of the lift interiors no longer reflected the quality expected within a modern commercial office environment. KPMG required a solution that would not only improve reliability and maintainability but also enhance the visual appearance of the lifts as part of the wider office refurbishment programme.
Following a detailed survey, Acute Elevators developed a comprehensive modernisation package designed to upgrade the key mechanical, electrical, and aesthetic elements of the installations whilst avoiding the cost and disruption associated with complete lift replacement.
Challenge
The project presented several technical and logistical challenges:
