SCHOOL LIFTS FOR SCHOOLS, COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

At Acute Elevators, we provide bespoke school lifts for architects and developers designing accessible education environments. We draw on over 30 years of industry experience to deliver high-quality lift solutions for education buildings.
Our lifts for schools, colleges, and universities support the safe and efficient movement of pupils, staff, visitors, and goods between floors.
Many educational buildings, particularly older properties, feature narrow staircases or level access constraints, making them unsuitable for wheelchair users and limiting overall accessibility.
Each solution is tailored to the building’s layout and day-to-day operational needs.

SPECIFYING AND INTEGRATING SCHOOL LIFTS

Installing a school lift is a coordinated process designed to minimise disruption within active education environments.

The process begins with a detailed site survey, assessing floor-to-floor heights, user flow, and spatial constraints. This allows for informed recommendations on lift type, platform dimensions, and optimal positioning within the building layout.

Depending on the project, preparatory works may include structural modifications, electrical provision, or localised adjustments to flooring and surrounding service areas.

Installation is then carried out by qualified engineers, followed by thorough testing to ensure compliance with UK safety and accessibility standards.

On completion, the lift is handed over with full technical documentation and operational guidance, supporting straightforward integration into the building’s day-to-day use.

Ongoing maintenance is recommended to ensure long-term reliability, minimise downtime, and support continued compliance with relevant regulations.

THE ROLE OF LIFTS IN SCHOOLS

Lifts form a key part of the overall circulation strategy within multi-level education buildings. Early specification helps ensure accessibility requirements are met while supporting efficient movement throughout the school day.

In schools, colleges, and universities, lifts provide essential step-free access between floors in line with the Equality Act 2010 and Part M of the Building Regulations. This is particularly important in buildings with high daily occupancy and varied user needs.

Lift car and platform sizes typically include 1400mm x 1100mm to accommodate a wheelchair user with an attendant, or when lift doors are adjacent (at 90 degrees to each other), or 1400mm x 900mm for a wheelchair user only .

Solutions can be specified based on travel height, building layout, and anticipated usage, ensuring accessibility is achieved without unnecessary over-specification or impact on usable space.

TYPES OF LIFTS FOR EDUCATION BUILDINGS

PLATFORM LIFTS

Typically specified for low-rise buildings where step-free access is required but space is limited. Platform lifts are designed in line with BS EN 81-41 and certified under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2006/42.

They travel at lower speeds, with a maximum speed of 0.15m/s, and require minimal pit depth and headroom, making them well-suited to retrofit projects or areas where structural constraints restrict the use of a full passenger lift.

CABIN LIFTS

Cabin lifts provide fully enclosed vertical transport for smaller multi-storey education buildings. Certified under the same directive as platform lifts, they offer the advantage of a fully enclosed cabin with one-touch controls that closely replicate the look and feel of a passenger lift.

With low pit requirements and minimal headroom, they are well-suited to retrofit projects or compact spaces where structural constraints limit the installation of a conventional lift. They do not require a deep pit, lift over-run, or extensive lift headroom, helping to simplify installation and reduce the need for major structural alterations.

PASSENGER LIFTS

Passenger lifts are designed to BS EN 81-20/50 and installed in accordance with the Lifts Regulations 2016. They are suited to buildings with higher occupancy levels and more frequent vertical movement.

Commonly specified in multi-storey education buildings, they support reliable circulation between floors for pupils, staff, and visitors throughout the school day.

See our guide to BS EN 81-20 and BS EN 81-50.

DESIGN AND COMPLIANCE GUIDANCE

Acute Elevators is a UKAS ISO 9001 certified company, ensuring that every school lift project is delivered to recognised standards of quality and safety.

Our school lifts are designed to meet the specific structural, spatial, and operational requirements of education buildings.

Drawings and specification packs guide architects, engineers, and contractors on shaft dimensions, power, and lift integration with the building.

Our team also provides guidance on school lift servicing schedules to help maintain performance and extend the lifespan of your lift. Read our guide on how often different types of lifts should be serviced.

FAQS

WHICH LIFTS ARE BEST FOR OLD SCHOOL BUILDINGS?

Platform lifts are ideal for tight spaces, requiring minimal pit depth (from 50 mm) and low headroom (from 2 m), making them well-suited to buildings where structural alterations must be kept to a minimum. Similarly, commercial cabin lifts provide a fully enclosed ride comparable to a traditional passenger lift but without the need for deep pits, large headroom, or three-phase power. Their compact footprint and flexible drive options, including hydraulic, traction rope, or belt, allow for easier integration into existing structures.

CAN SCHOOL LIFTS BE INSTALLED OUTDOORS, SUCH AS IN PLAYGROUNDS?

Yes. Platform lifts can be installed outdoors and are suitable for playgrounds or sports areas. They are compact and can be built with weather-resistant materials.

ARE SCHOOL LIFTS REQUIRED BY LAW?

Yes. Under the Equality Act 2010, schools with multiple levels are required to provide step-free access to ensure all students, staff, and visitors can move around the building safely. Installing a lift is a common and practical solution to meet this legal requirement while maintaining accessibility and compliance.
