LIFTS FOR CHURCHES

Acute Elevators provides lifts for churches designed with architectural integrity in mind. Our lifts provide safe, practical access between levels, accommodating wheelchair users and those with limited mobility, while respecting the building’s design and heritage.

Each lift is tailored to the building layout, integrating discreetly into interiors without disrupting the existing aesthetic or daily activities. Our bespoke approach ensures compatibility with both modern parish halls and historic places of worship.

Every project includes detailed planning and technical drawings, giving architects confidence in the safety standards and long-term reliability of the lift. We work closely with design teams to ensure installations meet both functional requirements and design expectations.

CHURCH LIFT INSTALLATION AND INTEGRATION

Specifying a lift for a church requires careful planning to suit building design and visitor flow. The process begins with a site survey to evaluate staircases, floor heights, and structural constraints, helping our team recommend the most suitable lift type and configuration.

Preparation work, including any structural adjustments or power provision, is coordinated to minimise disruption to services. Certified engineers then install, assemble, and rigorously test each lift, ensuring it meets accessibility and safety standards.

Following handover, ongoing maintenance programmes maintain performance, reduce downtime, and ensure continued compliance with UK accessibility regulations.

This approach keeps your lift safe and functional while integrating smoothly into the church environment. Read our guide, ‘What does lift maintenance include’ for a more in-depth overview.

TYPES OF ELEVATOR LIFTS FOR CHURCHES

We offer a range of lift solutions for churches, chapels, and other places of worship, designed to improve accessibility while respecting architectural character. Whether you are adapting a historic church or designing a new church building, our lifts support Part M compliance and inclusive access.

Platform lifts for churches – Vertical cabin lifts operating up to 0.15 m/s, certified to the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 (formerly Machinery Directive 2006/42). These lifts are ideal for providing Part M compliant access between floors in churches where space is limited and structural alterations need to be minimised.

Step lifts for churches – Short-rise platform lifts designed to overcome small changes in level, such as raised entrances, chancels, or split-level interiors. These lifts provide compliant wheelchair access with minimal building alteration, making them well-suited to traditional and listed church buildings.

Passenger lifts for churches – EN81-20/50 compliant passenger lifts designed for multi-storey church buildings, large congregations, and community hubs. Suitable where higher traffic or greater travel distances are required.

FAQS

DO CHURCHES NEED PLANNING PERMISSION TO INSTALL A LIFT?

Whether planning permission is required depends on the impact of the lift on the building’s architecture and historic features. Listed churches or those within conservation areas typically require consent, particularly for works that alter the structure or character of the building. Early engagement with the local planning authority is recommended to ensure compliance and a smooth approval process.

HOW LONG DOES A LIFT INSTALLATION TAKE IN A CHURCH?

Installation times vary depending on the type of lift, its size, and the level of customisation required. Platform lifts are typically quicker to install, often taking just a few days to a couple of weeks. Standard passenger lifts usually require more time, generally between 4 and 12 weeks, due to the additional structural and technical considerations. Bespoke designs, particularly those integrated into heritage or complex interiors, may extend the installation period to ensure a seamless fit and minimal disruption to the building.

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM WEIGHT OR PASSENGER CAPACITY OF CHURCH LIFTS?

Capacity varies by lift type. Platform lifts typically support a single wheelchair and companion, while passenger lifts can carry multiple users and higher loads. Specifications are available in our brochures.
